Cat and Dog Stories

My beautiful Gypsy

Who doesn't love great cat and dog stories?

Of course, we say it's for the children, but let's be honest, it's just as much fun reading animal stories for children when we're adults. The great thing is that we can read the book to our kids (what a great excuse) and have double the enjoyment!

My children's book, The Little Cat who thought she was a Dog, began many years ago, in Chingola in Zambia.

How the idea for the book came about I'll save for another day, but it started with Gypsy, our beautiful little girl cat, who definitely thought she was a dog...

Having always had a love of writing, I was always busy with one idea or another on my computer, and I wrote the first draft, thinking I'd tidy it up at some point.

And so it gathered dust for a few years, as life got busy making other plans for us...

But I never forgot, and every now and then I'd retrieve the file and work on it a little.

When I wrote the first draft we had three animals, two cats and one dog. By the time I completed the manuscript we had doubled that number and our family had grown to become eight in all. That is, Mum and Dad and six kids (of the four-legged variety)!

I'd made myself a promise over the years that I would finish the manuscript, illustrate it and publish it. I called it my love letter to my children, and it became very important to me to fulfil my promise.

And so here we are, approximately ten years on, after moving from Zambia to the UK and finally to South Africa, and I've fulfilled my promise to myself and to my children.

The Little Cat who thought she was a Dog is finally complete!

For me it encapsulates enormous happiness and an abundance of love and joy as it captures a special time in our lives when we were the happiest family in the world.

Writing and illustrating this story gave me great pleasure and I hope that those who read it, whether Mum or Dad reading it to their children, or children reading it alone, derive as much pleasure as they turn the pages.

The Little Cat who thought she was a Dog will be available on Amazon and I'll be posting links to both the paperback and kindle versions soon (although I must admit to a preference for the paperback version, myself, for a fuller experience).
